With powerful vocals by Snigdha Diehl,

blistering guitar work from Greg C. Brown, thunderous drums by Bill Rad Morris, and the driving bass of Rick Brown, Age of Fire’s latest single Race Against the Setting Sun captures the urgency of life’s fleeting moments. Written after the loss of Greg’s parents, the track is infused with the spirit of Carpe Diem—a reminder to live fully and make the best of the time we have. We caught up with Snigdha for an exclusive interview.
Was there something or someone who was the "catalyst" for you to go into music?
Music has literally surrounded me since before I was born. My dad would pull out his guitar and play his favorites: The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Crosby Stills Nash and Young. My grandmother starred in classic Indian films as an actress, my mom and sister captivated the stage with song and dance. My mom recorded me creating my own songs as a kid. Fast forward to my teenage years, and my dad connected me with this incredible voice teacher who took me to my first opera. I was hooked! I became a regular at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, watching legends like Renée Fleming and Anna Netrebko command the stage with pure vocal power. Through my solo performances and as part of a choir, I had an electric feeling performing and connecting with an audience and there was no going back.
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened in your music career?
If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be the lead singer of a metal band, I would've laughed at you. I’m a soprano who grew up on opera and folk music diving headfirst into the world of metal. I'm basically a metal newbie on the ultimate crash course, learning the history and nuances of an incredible genre. It's incredibly exciting! Metal lets me use my vocal range in more ways than in classic rock. It's challenging in a fun way and creative. I can't wait to see what adventures are ahead.
What has been the highlight of your music path?
Right now, honestly. This moment feels like everything I've dreamed of coming together. As a teenager, I was completely mesmerized by powerhouse women like Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett. I'd go to their shows and think, How do they make it look so effortless? But with my classical training, I never thought I could access those raw, powerful sounds. Turns out, I was wrong! I keep surprising myself by discovering new things my voice can do – sounds that feel authentic and exciting. The incredibly talented musician and voice teacher Christina Fleming has helped me so much to bridge my classical foundation with this new rock identity. I am grateful for her mentorship. It's like finding pieces of myself I didn't know existed.
How do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I've been a secret songwriter since I was little. I always loved poetry and getting lost in words. My process is pretty organic: I find my quiet space, let my thoughts and feelings flow, and just play. The key is not trying to nail it perfectly on the first try. I'll mess around with lyrics and melodies, let ideas bounce around until something clicks. Collaboration is where the magic really happens, though. I've been incredibly lucky to grow up musically with some amazing musicians and teachers from the Front Porch music school and my neighborhood. We've been learning and creating together, which feels like the best kind of musical education. Now I'm thrilled to be collaborating on new material with Greg Brown and Age of Fire – the creative energy is just incredible.
Do you have a new release? Tell us about it.
We just dropped "Race Against the Setting Sun," and let me tell you – this song was a journey! It's this fast, thrashy track that Greg wrote, and initially, I could not figure out the melody. But sometimes the best songs come from wrestling with them until you find that perfect fit, and I think we really nailed it. You can catch it on YouTube and Bandcamp right now, and it'll be hitting Spotify and all the streaming platforms on September 19th. Plus, we've got more new songs coming that I had an absolute blast working on.
If you could share the stage or a song session with an artist, who would it be?
I definitely have my wish list! Lzzy Hale from Halestorm is crushing it with her incredible voice and stage presence – she's become such an inspiring mentor figure for women in rock. Then there's Floor Jansen from Nightwish, who does this seamless magic mixing operatic head voice with powerful belting. Watching her perform is electrifying. Ann Wilson will always be a total icon. Listening to classic Heart albums like Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen still teaches me new things about what my voice can do. Also, Freddie Mercury brought together the storytelling and vocals of opera with rock music in a way nobody had ever imagined. Pure genius.
For fans who have never heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
Age of Fire has these deep roots going back to the 80's thrash scene, all thanks to our incredibly accomplished songwriter and guitarist Greg Brown. The sound is heavy but versatile – every song has its own personality, whether it's melancholy, groovy, or rocking. As for my voice, people tell me it has this bright quality that cuts through the mix. I can hit those high notes, but I've also developed some solid power in my lower chest voice over the years. It's funny how women's voices keep evolving – mine definitely keeps surprising me with what it can do.
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, producing or something else?
Performing, hands down! All the preparation, the rehearsals, the anticipation – it all becomes worth it the moment you step onto that stage. For me, performing is about connecting with every person in the audience, breathing life into the songs, being completely present in the moment, and just having this incredible shared experience with the band. This passion runs in my family – we grew up performing for our community from a young age. The stage feels like home.
When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I'm most inspired by experiencing art of all kinds. I love catching live shows, salsa dancing, going to theater and Broadway shows, and art museums. I also love exploring new places through travel, and soaking up quality time with my family and good friends.
What is coming up in the future for you?
Age of Fire is releasing several new songs this year featuring me on vocals, and we're planning shows throughout Charlottesville, Richmond, VA, and Maryland. The energy we're building is incredible, and I can't wait for people to experience these new songs live. Definitely stay tuned – we're just getting started!
